MediaCityUK - Landsec

Key facts

  • MediaCity is a Joint Venture owned by Peel LLP and Landsec. Landsec acquired its interest in late 2021.
  • The site consists of 2 distinct phases across 80 acres, the first of which started in 2006 following the projects selection as the new home for the BBC in the North
  • The first phase is complete and delivers a highly sustainable, waterside community of c. 1500 new homes and new homes and 500k sq/ft of commercial floorspace. 
  • It is currently home to some of the world’s most exciting creative, tech and media brands, from the BBC and ITV to Ericsson, Kellogg’s and over 250 creative and tech businesses. 
  • Three education establishments are based at MCUK, including The University of Salford’s dedicated MediaCity campus, while at its heart is HOST, the Home of Skills & Technology, which supports innovators in data, analytics, cybersecurity, AI, gaming and immersive technologies. 
  • The second phase, currently vacant and cleared was subject to a revised masterplan process which culminated in a new scheme being approved by Salford council in March 2024
  • Inspired by design-led waterfronts such as Oslo in Norway and Australia’s Darling Harbour, the revised regeneration proposals include c3,000 new homes as well as c800,000 sq ft of additional commercial space across 60 acres.  

Role

Mike was part of the executive team that acquired the interest in the JV from Peel LLP and Legal and General in 2021.


Focussing on the development potential of Phase 2, and the next stage in the transformation of this evolving destination, Mike led the consultant team through due diligence to ascertain the potential of this long stalled opportunity.


New regeneration proposals to deliver Phase 2 and transform the site into an iconic new waterfront destination were approved by Salford City Council in March 2024.
